A study of the hydration and dehydration transitions of SrCl2 hydrates for use in heat storage

We have experimentally determined the main thermodynamic properties of SrCl2, a potentially promising salt for thermochemical heat storage. found high energy density 2.4 ± 0.1 GJ/m3 and proved full cyclability at least 10 cycles going from anhydrate to hexahydrate without chemical degradation. equilibria each individual transition corresponding metastable zones. find that zone is widest monohydrate decreases with subsequent hydration step. also established observed nucleation kinetics are highly dependent on preparation sample. Depending conditions, some seeds precursor phase can remain in sample thereby influencing induction times transition. In storage applications we recommend selecting conditions well away lines (at outside zone) leave be transferred order increase speed.
